“You ever wonder how different your life would be if you chose differently?”
In their new single Choices, Bay Area-born R&B artist Samiere takes listeners on a journey deep into the towering forests of Muir Woods and Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. The scene feels cinematic — golden light cutting through redwood branches, air thick with quiet, and them, standing at a crossroads in more ways than one.
Choices is about making the kinds of decisions that shake your whole world. The ones you hope won’t destroy the love, closeness, or connection you once had with someone — but know will inevitably change everything.
“It took me five years of therapy to walk away from something I invested ten years into. I really wanted to and imagined myself spending my life with my ex. We had built this life full of love, comfortability, community, influence, and experiences. After all that time invested, you feel like a failure when you walk away and essentially start from scratch.”
For Samiere, it wasn’t just the end of a relationship — it was the dismantling of an entire life. Most people avoid choices like this because they don’t want to face the fallout. But for them, the truth became undeniable: where they were wasn’t bringing them joy, and they had to face the consequences of choosing themself.
“My therapist helped me develop something I’d lacked — boundaries. Once I started setting them, I realized my feelings and ideas for growth weren’t being valued. I no longer wanted to be the only one responsible for our good and bad days.”
Even attempts to reconcile were met with broken promises — even the smallest ones, like allowing visitation rights to their dog. Instead, they were painted as the villain, accused of things they hadn’t done, and blamed for problems that weren’t theirs alone.
“The choice I made ultimately led to us not speaking again. Choices are tough — especially the life-changing ones. You have to believe you’re worth making that choice. You have to trust you can survive the outcome, good or bad.”
Though they still wish their ex well, Samiere’s therapist reminded them it’s okay to love someone from afar, to silently cheer them on, and still remember why you left. The tears they cried to reach this moment have given them clarity — they know they deserve to be someone’s hell yes.
They’re still growing, still in therapy, and still learning. A recommendation from their friend James B. Golden led them to read Not Nice, a book that made them realize they had been staying because of hope — and hope has a limit. Even with the grief of losing not only a relationship but a friendship, they’re proud they bet on themself.
Choices is the sound of that decision — the soundtrack of walking out of the forest, into the unknown, but toward themself.
